Urgent Search for 4 Suspects After Jewelry Heist in Newmarket
UPDATE: Police are urgently searching for three to four armed suspects following a violent smash-and-grab robbery at the Upper Canada Mall in Newmarket this afternoon. The incident unfolded just after 3:30 p.m.> today, December 16, 2023, when the suspects targeted the Peoples Jewellers store, causing chaos and panic among shoppers.
Witnesses reported that multiple suspects, armed with hammers, stormed the store, smashing display cases and stealing a substantial amount of jewelry before fleeing the scene. Surveillance footage shows the suspects in dark clothing forcefully removing items from the store as they were pursued by a security guard and a police officer.
According to Stf. Sgt. Peter Cheung of York Regional Police, officers were already on-site for the annual Holiday Heroes Toy Drive when the robbery occurred. Officers rushed to the jewelry store but were met with aggression; the suspects deployed pepper spray, injuring one officer and two security guards. They received treatment for minor injuries, although it remains unclear if they were taken to a hospital.
The suspects, last seen fleeing in a dark-coloured SUV, have sparked a significant police presence in the area. Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has information about the suspects to come forward. Tips can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
The event has left many shoppers shaken. “It’s kind of alarming to see this happen, especially during the holiday season,” Stf. Sgt. Cheung remarked. He confirmed that many customers were present inside the jewelry store and mall during the robbery, heightening concerns about safety.
This incident is not isolated; a similar robbery occurred at the same mall about a month ago, although the suspects in that case were apprehended. The total value of the stolen jewelry from today’s incident has not yet been disclosed.
As the investigation continues, police are maintaining a strong presence at Upper Canada Mall, advising the public to avoid the area while they gather further evidence and seek the suspects. The situation remains fluid, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
Stay tuned for developments on this urgent story as authorities work to apprehend those responsible for this brazen act.
