Sherry Walsh, a prominent judge representing Canada, is currently evaluating dancers at the International Dance Organization (IDO) World Championships in Italy. The event features approximately 2,400 dancers from 36 countries, highlighting the global nature of dance talent. This week-long competition showcases a variety of genres, including solos, duos, and group performances.

Experience and Passion Fuel Judging Career

Walsh, a former dance studio owner from Sault Ste. Marie, has dedicated her career to assessing dance talent at various competitions since 2016. Her extensive experience includes judging in locations such as Poland, Germany, and Prague. During her judging, she noted, “When something is good, the time flies. The level of talent is just over the roof.”

As one of nine judges at the IDO World Championships, Walsh is tasked with evaluating performances across several styles, including improvisation and show dance. Competitors range in age from seven to fifty, demonstrating the wide appeal of dance.

A Unique Atmosphere of Camaraderie

Despite the competitive nature of the event, Walsh has observed a strong sense of camaraderie among the dancers. “Everybody comes together for the simple and common purpose and that’s to share their love, passion, and joy for the art of dance,” she remarked. This unity is especially evident when language barriers exist; gestures like smiles, handshakes, and applause transcend spoken communication.

Walsh’s judging requires strict adherence to competition rules, including a prohibition on communicating with dancers, coaches, and trainers about their performances. During breaks, she and her fellow judges discuss topics outside of dance, fostering a supportive environment among their ranks. Walsh emphasized the importance of having experience with various age groups to be an effective judge.

In addition to her judging role, Walsh has also contributed to the dance community by teaching part-time at Studio Dance Arts until the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. She currently works as a physician assistant to Dr. Christine Macie.

The IDO World Championships serve not only as a platform for showcasing exceptional talent but also as a celebration of the universal language of dance. Walsh’s enthusiasm and commitment to the art form continue to inspire both competitors and fellow judges alike.
