Calgary MLA Tanya Fir Apologizes After Leaked Voicemail Controversy
UPDATE: Calgary-Peigan MLA Tanya Fir is facing backlash and has issued a public apology after a leaked voicemail surfaced, capturing her using foul language. The voicemail, recorded on November 10, 2023, was shared online by columnist Doug Firby and has sparked significant outrage among constituents.
In the voicemail, Fir acknowledges a constituent’s feedback regarding the ongoing teachers’ strike but appears to use inappropriate language afterward. “Was that OK?” she is heard asking before a second voice responds, “I think so.” Shortly after, Fir’s voice is captured saying, “Who are the next m**********rs?” This revelation has ignited discussions about decorum and professionalism among public officials.
In a statement to CTV News, Fir described the incident as a “moment of poor judgment.” She expressed regret for her choice of words, stating, “I flippantly used an inappropriate word that I had been called following political disagreement over the past few weeks.” She has since reached out to the individual affected, offering her sincere apologies.
The voicemail was accessed by Firby after he received a call from a stranger named Sean, who claimed his number was included in Fir’s message. Firby expressed his anger and frustration, stating, “My personal information should not have been anywhere. That’s confidential, obviously.” He also noted a tone of contempt in Fir’s comments and felt it was unacceptable for a public official to behave in such a manner.
After contacting Fir to discuss the voicemail, Firby reported that she was visibly upset and tearful upon hearing her own words. “She was very, very apologetic,” he recounted, emphasizing that Fir clarified her comments were not directed at anyone in particular. The two engaged in a candid discussion about the harsh treatment politicians often endure from the public.
“She told me that she didn’t mean to use that language back at people,” Firby said. “She was in shell shock from all of the verbal abuse that she’s been receiving.” He described Fir’s demeanor as flustered and said she played him a selection of rude voicemails she had received, reflecting the harsh reality many politicians face.
Despite the controversy, Firby stated that he has forgiven Fir and considers the issue closed, saying, “Yeah, she’s absolutely forgiven, yeah, absolutely.”
This incident highlights the increasing pressures and scrutiny faced by public officials and the importance of maintaining professionalism, even in moments of frustration. As this story continues to develop, constituents are urged to consider the implications of Fir’s actions and the broader context of political discourse in Alberta.
