David Letterman Honours Warren Zevon at Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
On November 8, 2025, television host David Letterman inducted the late Warren Zevon into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame during a ceremony held at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles. Zevon was posthumously awarded the “Musical Influence Award,” recognizing his profound impact on rock music and culture. This year’s ceremony also honored other notable artists, including Bad Company, Cyndi Lauper, and Soundgarden.
The “Musical Influence Award,” previously known as the “Early Influence” category, celebrates artists whose work has significantly shaped the musical landscape. Alongside Zevon, the award was also given to Salt-N-Pepa. Zevon, who passed away in 2003, is best known for iconic songs like “Werewolves of London” and “Lawyers, Guns and Money.” His work has influenced countless musicians, earning him the reputation of being an “artist’s artist.”
Letterman’s Tribute and Performance
In his heartfelt introduction, Letterman described Zevon as a poet and a quintessential rock and roller, whose music encapsulated the complexities of life. He noted that Zevon’s songs were “dense with historic illusion, love, and sadness tinted with unexpected whimsy.” This emotional tribute resonated with the audience, particularly when Letterman recalled Zevon’s poignant advice during his final appearance on the “Late Show,” where he famously urged, “enjoy every sandwich.”
The ceremony culminated in a vibrant performance by The Killers, who paid tribute to Zevon with a rendition of “Lawyers, Guns and Money.” Lead vocalist Brandon Flowers, alongside guitarist Dave Keuning, drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr., and bassist Mark Stoermer, captivated the audience. Veteran guitarist Waddy Wachtel joined them, infusing the performance with an electric energy. Flowers included a nod to Zevon’s “Werewolves of London,” making the tribute even more special.
Letterman presented Zevon’s guitar, a gift he had given 22 years prior, to Keuning before the performance. “Congratulations, Warren. Thank you for everything. Enjoy every sandwich,” Letterman exclaimed, highlighting the personal connection he shared with the legendary musician. The ceremony, which celebrates the contributions of influential artists, can be viewed in its entirety on the streaming service Disney+.
The legacy of Warren Zevon as a poignant songwriter continues to resonate, and his contributions to music remain influential. For further insights into his musical journey, fans can visit his official website.
