BREAKING: The Mayor of Waterloo, Dorothy McCabe, has just announced a motion to kickstart the development of a state-of-the-art high-performance swimming facility in the community. This urgent proposal aims to address the growing demand for aquatics infrastructure as thousands of residents participate in swimming programs across the region.

The proposed facility will feature a 50-metre competition pool, a practice pool, training rooms, and meeting spaces. McCabe emphasized that the province is lagging in aquatics infrastructure compared to the rapid population growth in Waterloo. She stated, “Building a new or renovating an existing aquatic facility would enhance access to recreational programming as well as provide improved opportunities for training elite swimmers in the City of Waterloo and in neighbouring communities.”

Currently, the only facility in the region with a 50-metre competition pool is located at Wilfrid Laurier University, which is nearing the end of its operational life. This has raised concerns about the availability of adequate training facilities for competitive swimmers.

The city is considering this project contingent on securing funding from federal and provincial governments, as well as potential partners. Notably, Swim Ontario, the provincial governing body for swimming, has expressed strong support for this initiative, highlighting its significance for the community.

The motion is scheduled to be tabled during the upcoming council meeting on Monday, November 24, 2023, which will begin at 6:30 p.m. Residents and stakeholders are urged to pay attention as this meeting will determine the next steps for this critical project.

As Canada reflects on sacrifices made during Remembrance Day, the urgency of investing in community infrastructure like this aquatic facility cannot be overstated. It represents not only the potential for elite training but also a vital resource for recreational activities that benefit the entire community.
