UPDATE: A tragic incident unfolds in God’s Lake Narrows, Manitoba, where a 20-year-old man has died after consuming a mysterious liquid substance early Sunday morning. Authorities report that two teenagers, aged 15 and 17, are also in critical condition and have been airlifted to Winnipeg for urgent medical treatment.

At approximately 12:40 a.m. on November 16, 2023, the RCMP responded to a call from a First Nation Safety Officer regarding the man’s medical emergency. Upon arrival, officers discovered a large crowd at the nursing station, where the man was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.

The RCMP’s preliminary investigation revealed that around 10 other individuals in the community may have also ingested the substance, but they were treated and released without serious complications. The identity of the liquid remains undisclosed as police have seized a container for analysis, and the provider of the substance has been identified.

In a statement, Keewatin Tribal Council Grand Chief Walter Wastesicoot expressed condolences, noting that the community is “in shock.” He confirmed that the Keewatin Tribal Council Trauma Team is en route to provide support to affected residents. Meanwhile, Shared Health has transported two minors and one young adult to the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg but declined to comment further on the patients’ conditions due to privacy regulations.

The local Chief, Gilbert Andrews, is reportedly refraining from media comments as the community grapples with this devastating loss. Concerns regarding substance abuse in the area have long been highlighted, with reports indicating that more than a fifth of the God’s Lake First Nation residents face addiction challenges.

As investigations by the God’s Lake Narrows RCMP and Manitoba RCMP Major Crime Services continue, authorities urge anyone with information about the incident or the substance to come forward.

This developing story underscores the urgent need for community support and awareness regarding substance use, particularly in vulnerable populations. Residents are advised to stay tuned for updates as more information becomes available.
