UPDATE: A devastating incident unfolded on Friday at Garrapata Beach in California, where 7-year-old Anzi Hu from Calgary tragically drowned after being swept away by a powerful wave. Her father, Yuji Hu, aged 39, attempted to rescue her but was also swept into the ocean. This heartbreaking news has left the family and community in shock.

Officials from the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office reported receiving a call for a water rescue just before 1 p.m. on Friday. A tourist and an off-duty lifeguard rushed to assist the family as they struggled in the turbulent waters. Tragically, Yuji was swept away while trying to save his daughter, while Anzi’s mother attempted to reach them but was unable to do so.

Emergency responders managed to pull Yuji from the water, administering CPR before he was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Anzi’s mother was treated for mild hypothermia and later released, while their two-year-old daughter was unharmed. The family has requested privacy as they grieve this profound loss.

Search operations for Anzi continued until 9 p.m. on Friday but were halted due to dangerous conditions. Efforts resumed at sunrise on Saturday and continued into Sunday. Juan Heredia, a local diver who founded a recovery dive team, learned of the incident and traveled to the beach to assist.

When Heredia arrived, he collaborated with sheriff deputies who believed the strong current had driven Anzi south. However, as the tide receded, he observed that the water was moving north and soon spotted Anzi approximately 400-800 meters from where she was last seen, just 90 meters from the shore.

In an emotional moment, Heredia reflected on the tragedy, saying, “This case shocked me because when I grabbed her in my arms to walk to the shore, I remembered my daughter.” He praised Yuji as a hero for his courageous attempt to save his daughter, a sentiment echoed by many.

The incident has raised urgent safety concerns about Garrapata Beach, which is known for its treacherous waves. Mike Dippel, chief ranger with California State Parks, confirmed that waves reaching heights of 4.5 to 6 meters were reported on Friday. He warned that parts of the beach can quickly drop into very deep water, posing significant risks to unsuspecting visitors.

“We respond to similar situations several times per year,” said Andres Rosas, a public information officer with the sheriff’s office. He emphasized the importance of being aware of surf conditions, advising beachgoers to avoid turning their backs on the ocean and to seek out lifeguarded beaches.

This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by powerful ocean currents and the need for vigilance when visiting coastal areas. The community mourns the loss of Anzi and Yuji Hu, with many expressing their condolences and support for the grieving family.

As the investigation continues, officials urge visitors to stay informed about beach conditions and prioritize safety while enjoying California’s beautiful coastline.
