Two Former Ministers Compete to Become Nunavut’s Next Premier
OTTAWA – In a significant political contest, two former cabinet ministers are vying for the role of Nunavut’s next premier. David Akeeagok, a long-serving member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), and John Main, who previously served as health minister, presented their proposals to fellow MLAs following the election of David Joanasie as Speaker earlier today.
Akeeagok, who has been an MLA since 2017, has held various key cabinet positions throughout his tenure. His experience in governance positions him as a seasoned candidate in this leadership race. Meanwhile, Main is notable for his fluency in Inuktitut and would make history as the first non-Inuk premier if elected.
Under Nunavut’s unique consensus-style government, which lacks formal political parties, MLAs will vote among themselves to determine the premier and select up to eight cabinet ministers. This system is designed to encourage collaboration and consensus-building among elected representatives.
The political landscape in Nunavut is currently shaped by the recent elections held on October 27, 2025, which recorded the lowest voter turnout in the territory’s history. This low engagement raises questions about public interest and participation in the political process, highlighting the need for leaders who can effectively engage the community.
As both candidates prepare their pitches, the outcome of this competitive race will have significant implications for the governance and direction of Nunavut in the coming years. The election of a new premier will also reflect the evolving political identity of the territory, particularly as it navigates the challenges of representation and inclusivity in its leadership.
This report from the Canadian Press provides an overview of the current political dynamics in Nunavut as the two candidates position themselves for the pivotal role of premier. The community will be closely watching the developments in this contest as it unfolds.
