Calgary Flames Acquire John Beecher from Boston Bruins to Boost Roster
The Calgary Flames have strengthened their forward lineup by acquiring centre John Beecher off waivers from the Boston Bruins. This move comes amid a challenging 2025-26 NHL season for the Flames, who currently hold the last position in the league standings. The transaction was confirmed by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman following Beecher’s placement on waivers earlier this week.
Beecher, a former first-round pick selected 30th overall in the 2019 NHL Draft, joins the Flames after participating in 136 career NHL games. Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 230 pounds, the 24-year-old has appeared in six games this season, contributing one goal. While expectations for Beecher to become a prolific point producer may be tempered, his skills in other areas could be advantageous for Calgary.
The Flames have struggled with their penalty kill, currently ranking 24th in the NHL with a rate of 77.3 percent. Beecher’s experience includes an average of 1:31 of penalty-killing time per game last season across 78 appearances. His ability to disrupt opposing teams during power plays may provide a much-needed boost to the Flames’ special teams performance.
In addition to his defensive capabilities, Beecher has also proven to be effective in face-offs. He took 542 draws during the 2024-25 season, winning 52 percent of them. This is particularly relevant for the Flames, as only two players on the current roster, Mikael Backlund and Morgan Frost, have face-off percentages exceeding 50 percent. In comparison, Nazem Kadri has struggled at just 45.6 percent, while Connor Zary sits even lower at 41.6 percent.
With Beecher’s arrival, the Flames aim to enhance their overall competitiveness as they navigate the remainder of the season. The team’s management and fans will be eager to see how this acquisition impacts their performance in the coming games. More updates on Beecher’s integration into the lineup are expected as the Flames continue to seek improvement in their standings.
