Celebrities Condemn Megyn Kelly’s Controversial Epstein Remarks
Megyn Kelly’s recent comments regarding convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein have sparked outrage among various celebrities and public figures. During an episode of her Sirius XM program, Kelly questioned whether Epstein, who died in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges, could be considered a pedophile. She stated that he preferred “the barely legal type” and remarked, “He liked 15-year-old girls… I’m just giving you facts,” which many found deeply offensive.
In her discussion, Kelly emphasized that there was a distinction between a 15-year-old and a younger child. “There’s a difference between a 15-year-old and a five-year-old, you know?” she stated. This characterization drew sharp criticism from individuals who argued that such comments minimize the severity of Epstein’s actions and the impact on young victims.
Celebrity Backlash and Public Outcry
The backlash was swift, particularly from former child stars who expressed their dismay over Kelly’s remarks. Actress Melissa Gilbert, known for her role in *Little House on the Prairie*, shared her discomfort in a social media post. Reflecting on her own experience of acting alongside an older co-star at the age of 15, Gilbert wrote, “I am actually nauseated.” She highlighted how the industry often subjected young actors to inappropriate situations, stating, “I WAS A CHILD. I WAS FIFTEEN.”
Similarly, actress Christina Ricci labeled Kelly a “danger to children” in a post shared by Buzzfeed. Valerie Bertinelli also joined the conversation, posting a childhood photo and reiterating, “I’m FIFTEEN. I’M A CHILD.” These comments underline the shared sentiment among many that Kelly’s remarks were not only insensitive but also dangerous.
Late-night host John Oliver took to his platform to critique Kelly’s statements, questioning the rationale behind discussing the age of Epstein’s victims in such a manner. “If I am understanding you there — and I am definitely not — Epstein wasn’t into eight-year-olds. He was just into very young teens,” he remarked. Oliver urged for clarity and responsibility when discussing such serious topics, stating, “please do kill me if I ever start doing pedophile math.”
Concerns Over Language and Responsibility
Former *View* host Meghan McCain also weighed in, criticizing Kelly for her choice of words. McCain expressed confusion over why the discussion was framed in terms of acceptability, emphasizing that any form of pedophilia is unacceptable. “It’s disgusting and I don’t care,” she stated, questioning the purpose of such dialogue.
Kelly’s remarks have resurfaced as Epstein’s name has returned to the spotlight, particularly following the release of thousands of emails associated with him. These communications have reignited discussions about notable figures in Epstein’s circle, including politicians and celebrities. While Donald Trump has attempted to downplay his connections to Epstein, stating they were merely social, the implications of these revelations continue to provoke scrutiny.
In the wake of Kelly’s comments, many are calling for greater awareness and sensitivity when addressing topics involving minors and exploitation. The celebrity responses reflect a broader concern about societal attitudes towards such serious issues and the language used to discuss them. As public figures navigate these discussions, the emphasis remains on protecting vulnerable populations and ensuring that conversations do not inadvertently normalize unacceptable behavior.
