Boeing Completes Design for New 737 MAX Anti-Ice System
Boeing has successfully finalized the design and engineering for a new engine anti-ice system for its 737 MAX aircraft. This significant development comes as the company collaborates with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to establish a certification plan for the system, which will be available for new deliveries and retrofitted onto existing aircraft. The completion of this redesign is a crucial step toward certifying the delayed 737 MAX 7 and 737 MAX 10 variants, which have faced setbacks primarily due to issues with the anti-ice system.
The new engine anti-ice system is designed to combat ice build-up during adverse weather conditions. It directs air into the inlet cowl to prevent ice accumulation. However, earlier tests indicated potential risks of thermal damage to the nacelle’s composite structure when the system is used for extended periods. Boeing’s engineers have spent years addressing these concerns, which has contributed to the delays in certifying the MAX 7 and MAX 10 models.
A Step Forward for 737 MAX Variants
At the Dubai Airshow 2025, Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Stephanie Pope emphasized the extensive effort that has gone into the redesign. “We’ve spent thousands of hours getting that design done. Now it’s defining the certification plan, getting the FAA to accept that certification plan,” she stated. The certification process is critical, as it will allow the FAA to approve the new system, paving the way for the MAX 7 and MAX 10 to enter commercial service.
Boeing’s negotiations with the FAA will determine the timeline for the certification. Once the FAA reviews the new system, it may approve it or suggest modifications. The approval will not only facilitate the certification of the 737 MAX 7 and MAX 10 but will also lead to a retrofit plan for the currently in-service MAX 8 and MAX 9 models.
While the MAX 8 and MAX 9 are already in production, the focus is on the MAX 7, which has garnered significant orders from Southwest Airlines, and the MAX 10, which is critical for Boeing’s competitive stance against the Airbus A321neo. With over 1,200 orders placed for the MAX 10, its successful certification will be pivotal for securing Boeing’s position in the narrowbody market.
Implications for Boeing’s Future
The urgency of certifying the MAX 7 and MAX 10 cannot be understated. The MAX 7, while important for fulfilling contracts, is priced lower than its counterparts and may not significantly improve Boeing’s profit margins. In contrast, the MAX 10 is positioned to be a major player in the market, offering a competitive alternative to the A321neo, which has amassed over 7,000 orders since its launch.
Boeing anticipates that the MAX 10 will enter service in 2027 with WestJet, further solidifying its market presence. Once operational, the aircraft is expected to attract additional orders, enhancing Boeing’s competitiveness against Airbus. The company has ramped up production capacity, aiming to produce up to 42 737 MAX jets per month.
The completion of the anti-ice system design is a critical milestone for Boeing, marking a shift toward the successful reintroduction of the 737 MAX variants. As the company navigates the certification process, the aerospace industry will closely monitor developments, noting the implications for Boeing’s future in the competitive landscape of commercial aviation.
