UPDATE: A significant roof upgrade is set for St. Basil Catholic School in Sault Ste. Marie, as officials confirm a $1.3 million partial roof replacement for the school’s 300 wing next summer. This urgent project addresses the aging roof originally installed in 1994, ensuring a safer environment for the school’s more than 700 students.

The decision was revealed by Dave Coccimiglio, manager of plant services, during a recent meeting with the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board. As the school prepares for this major overhaul, it highlights the pressing need for modern infrastructure in educational facilities.

In addition to St. Basil’s upgrade, the board is prioritizing other capital projects, including the $1.5 million site improvements at Our Lady of Fatima in Elliot Lake. This project will enhance the school’s bus bay and parking lot, reflecting a commitment to improving student safety and accessibility. Recent upgrades at Our Lady of Fatima have included the installation of energy-efficient LED lighting and classroom renovations, showcasing a trend toward modernization.

Coccimiglio noted that while there are no major projects forecasted for the next few years, $600,000 is allocated for upgrades at Holy Name of Jesus in Hornepayne. These enhancements will focus on LED lighting, barrier-free access, and improvements to washrooms and exterior doors, with an audit to determine the full scope of work.

Furthermore, the gym floor at St. Mary’s in Blind River is set for replacement at a cost of $70,000. The English Catholic board plans to spend approximately $700,000 on general school requests and critical maintenance expenditures, ensuring that schools remain safe and conducive to learning.

These developments underscore a proactive approach to education infrastructure, prioritizing the needs of students and staff alike. As these projects unfold, the community watches closely, recognizing the direct impact on their children’s educational environment.

Stay tuned for further updates as these projects progress, and share this news to keep others informed about the vital improvements happening in our schools.
