United Way Greater Toronto Unveils Ambitious $1.5B Plan Today
UPDATE: In a groundbreaking move, Heather McDonald has stepped into her role as president and CEO of United Way Greater Toronto (UWGT) as of May 2023. This leadership transition comes at a pivotal moment as UWGT launches an ambitious $1.5 billion initiative aimed at combating poverty and inequality over the next decade.
McDonald, who has over 25 years of experience in social services, is now tasked with overseeing a network of more than 300 agencies. Her experience at LOFT Community Services, where she significantly expanded housing and mental health services, positions her to drive impactful change in the Greater Toronto Area.
This 10-year strategy focuses on crucial goals: expanding services, securing permanent spaces for community organizations, and creating 10 new community hubs to serve neighborhoods facing the greatest barriers. These hubs will act as one-stop shops for social and healthcare services, enhancing access and collaboration among organizations.
As McDonald assumes her role, the urgency of the challenges facing the community is palpable. According to recent reports, 1 in 10 people in the Greater Toronto Area are now relying on food banks, and many are struggling with housing affordability. McDonald emphasizes that UWGT is positioned to meet these pressing needs head-on.
“We are at the intersection of community needs,” McDonald stated, underscoring the critical work ahead. The organization’s new strategic plan aims not just to sustain existing services but to innovate and expand in response to the growing demands of the community.
The community real estate vision is another cornerstone of this plan, addressing the risk of displacement for 70% of the organizations UWGT supports. McDonald highlights the need to secure physical spaces owned by community organizations to ensure their long-term viability.
Looking ahead, McDonald expresses excitement about the potential for innovative solutions. “I believe United Way Greater Toronto represents the radical hope our region needs right now,” she said. With a clear vision and a commitment to collaboration, McDonald’s leadership offers a renewed sense of purpose for tackling the challenges facing the Greater Toronto Area.
As the community looks to support this critical initiative, contributions can be made at unitedwaygt.org/donatetoday. The urgency to act has never been greater, and the community’s involvement will be crucial to the success of UWGT’s mission over the next decade.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as UWGT embarks on this transformative journey to uplift communities in need.
