Heather McDonald Leads United Way Greater Toronto for Decade of Change
In May, Heather McDonald officially took on the role of president and CEO of United Way Greater Toronto (UWGT). This leadership change arrives at a pivotal time as UWGT embarks on an ambitious 10-year strategy aimed at enhancing essential services, securing permanent spaces for community organizations, and addressing poverty and inequality. The organization has set an impressive goal of raising $1.5 billion over the next decade to support these initiatives.
With more than 25 years of experience in the social and human services sector, McDonald previously served as CEO of LOFT Community Services, one of Ontario’s leading supportive housing and mental health service providers. Under her direction, LOFT expanded its housing portfolio and diversified its funding sources. Now, McDonald is responsible for overseeing a network of over 300 agencies supported by UWGT.
Path to Leadership in Social Services
McDonald’s journey into social services began with her master’s degree in social work. She has always been dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and communities. Initially working as a social worker, she felt a strong pull towards leadership roles that allowed her to drive change. Her career trajectory led her to a United Way-funded organization that focused on providing supportive housing and outreach to vulnerable populations.
Recognizing the need for both compassion and strategic thinking in leadership, McDonald returned to the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto to gain business skills. This education has equipped her with the necessary tools to merge her understanding of community needs with effective engagement strategies for corporate and philanthropic partners.
Challenges and Vision for the Future
Taking the helm at UWGT comes with significant challenges, particularly in light of the financial pressures faced by many Canadians. Recent statistics indicate that one in ten residents in the Greater Toronto Area relies on food banks, illustrating the urgent need for solutions to housing affordability and basic needs.
McDonald envisions a transformative future for UWGT, focusing on its recently launched strategic plan. One key element is the establishment of 10 community hubs, which will serve as comprehensive access points for social and healthcare services in the most underserved neighbourhoods. These hubs aim to enhance service delivery and foster collaboration among organizations.
Another critical aspect of her vision is addressing the stability of community organizations at risk of losing their spaces. McDonald points out that approximately 70% of the organizations supported by UWGT are threatened with displacement. By prioritizing community real estate, UWGT aims to ensure that essential services remain accessible for generations.
As McDonald settles into her new role, she expresses enthusiasm for the potential of UWGT’s strategic plan. She believes it aligns perfectly with the current and future needs of the region. “I came here because their strategic plan is right on,” she stated. “We need to create ten hubs, but the specifics of how those hubs take shape will come from our partnerships with the community.”
In a time when many feel increasingly disconnected, McDonald sees UWGT as a beacon of hope for the Greater Toronto Area. “In a world that feels more and more divided, we need a way forward,” she noted. “This is such a moment in time where United Way Greater Toronto is needed more than ever.”
