Grizzly Bear Attack in B.C. Leaves Several Injured, Two Critical

UPDATE: A shocking grizzly bear attack in the remote community of Bella Coola, British Columbia, has left several people hospitalized, with two individuals in critical condition. The attack occurred on Thursday afternoon, July 13, 2023, along a trail near Highway 20, prompting an immediate response from B.C. Emergency Health Services.

Paramedics rushed to the scene to provide emergency treatment to four victims. According to spokesperson Brian Twaites, “Two patients were in critical condition and two were in serious condition.” Additionally, seven others received care at the scene but did not require hospital transport, highlighting the urgent nature of the situation.

The B.C. Conservation Officer Service is actively responding to the incident but has yet to release further details. In a concerning social media update, the agency warned residents to “stay out of the forested and river area” near 4 Mile until further notice.

This attack is particularly alarming given its connection to the Acwsalcta School, operated by the Nuxalk First Nation. It remains unclear whether students or faculty were among the injured. In a statement to CTV News, a spokesperson for the local school district confirmed the school’s involvement. Due to the incident, a post on the Acwsalcta Facebook page announced that the school will be closed on Friday, expressing, “It’s hard to know what to say during this very difficult time. We are so grateful for our team and our students.”

In light of this traumatic event, the Nuxalk Nation has made support available Thursday evening at the local youth center, encouraging residents to drive rather than walk in order to ensure safety. Counseling and other support resources, including brushing and smudging opportunities, will be provided to help the community cope.
