Maple Leafs Fall in Overtime, Show Signs of Improvement
UPDATE: The Toronto Maple Leafs suffered another overtime defeat, losing 3-2 to the Columbus Blue Jackets on November 20, 2025, despite showing significant improvement on the ice. This latest result marks the Leafs’ second consecutive overtime game, following a hard-fought win against the St. Louis Blues.
Earlier this week, general manager Brad Treliving expressed cautious optimism about the team’s direction amid struggles, stating, “Even in games that we’ve won, we haven’t won the game.” The Leafs, currently holding a 9-9-3 record, are fighting to regain their footing as injuries continue to plague the roster.
In a game that saw the Leafs rally from a two-goal deficit, John Tavares scored the equalizer in the third period, reflecting the team’s growing resilience. “It’s getting better,” Tavares said. “A couple little tweaks we’ve made put us in a good spot.” Despite the loss, the Leafs showcased improved defensive play and an active forecheck.
During the match, the Leafs struggled with their power play, ranked 28th in the NHL, failing to capitalize when it mattered most. Head coach Craig Berube noted, “We needed to finish better … that’s really the story.” The team is still without six regulars, including star center Auston Matthews, but received a boost from gritty forward Scott Laughton, who returned from injury.
“It sucks we lost, but we keep rolling,” Laughton said, emphasizing the importance of staying positive. The team is beginning to see a shift in momentum, and rookie Easton Cowan is gaining trust on the ice, even contributing to Tavares’ goal. “I just gotta bury one of them,” Cowan remarked, highlighting his eagerness to convert chances into goals.
Goalie Joseph Woll made his third consecutive start, finishing with 27 saves in a game that continued to test his resolve. “It’s hard to take results purely as wins and losses,” Woll said, stressing the need for consistent performance. “We’re playing our way,” he added, reflecting the team’s commitment to improvement.
The Maple Leafs are looking to build on this momentum as they prepare for their next game. With the Eastern Conference standings tightening, every point is crucial. Fans are hopeful that the return of key players and the recent performances can turn the tide for the struggling franchise.
As the Leafs continue to face challenges, Treliving remains focused on the bigger picture. “Things are going better, and they’re going in a good direction right now,” he stated, urging the team to keep working hard and building chemistry.
The urgency is palpable as the Maple Leafs aim to string together wins and secure their position in the competitive NHL landscape. The next game will be critical for Toronto to maintain momentum and push towards better results.
