White Rock’s Canada Day Fireworks in Jeopardy Amid Safety Concerns
UPDATE: White Rock’s beloved Canada Day fireworks display is at risk of cancellation due to urgent safety concerns raised by city officials. During a city council meeting on Monday, Mayor Megan Knight expressed alarm over the overwhelming crowds at the annual July 1 event, stating, “Canada Day was completely out of control this year.”
As the city grapples with increased traffic congestion and littering issues, Knight highlighted that local RCMP are worried about emergency services’ access to the waterfront during peak times. Some residents even parked in the middle of roads to watch the fireworks, raising serious safety alarms.
The fireworks display costs the city approximately $9,000 per event, and officials are weighing alternatives. Although a drone show was considered as a more environmentally friendly option, it was deemed too expensive at around $35,000 and lacking the “wow” factor that fireworks provide.
Council member Susan Bains argues for maintaining the fireworks, citing their importance for local families and businesses. “To take that away… kind of takes away a spark that the city does provide,” Bains stated. She has suggested enhancing public safety measures, including more road closures and increased foot patrols.
Community business advocate Joslyn Young, CEO of the Surrey and White Rock Board of Trade, voiced her support for keeping the fireworks. “If you chip away at all of the community events… you take away that business from those business community members,” she warned. Young acknowledged the safety issues but stressed the need for a collaborative solution to ensure community events continue to thrive.
With similar fireworks cancellations occurring across British Columbia due to fire risks and budget concerns, the pressure is mounting. The council has decided to conduct a public engagement survey to gather resident feedback on fireworks at public events, with results expected to be reviewed in January.
This developing situation is crucial for residents and local businesses alike as they await the decision that could impact their Canada Day celebrations. Share your thoughts on this pressing issue and stay tuned for further updates as the council deliberates.
