Hurricanes Edge Jets 4-3 in Ehlers’ Emotional Winnipeg Return
UPDATE: In a thrilling showdown, the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Winnipeg Jets 4-3 on November 17, 2023, marking a dramatic return for Nikolaj Ehlers to his former home. The game not only showcased Ehlers’ pivotal role but also highlighted the challenges faced by the Jets as they deal with the absence of star goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, who is set to undergo knee surgery.
The Hurricanes wasted no time, with Jordan Staal scoring just 16 seconds into the match. Staal maneuvered around Jets defenseman Dylan Samberg to fire a shot past Eric Comrie, making his debut as Winnipeg’s starting goaltender. Comrie, stepping in for Hellebuyck, who is expected to be sidelined for four to six weeks, managed 24 saves during a challenging outing.
Just minutes into the game, the Jets responded with a goal from Josh Morrissey, tying the score at 1-1. Morrissey continued his impressive streak, recording his fifth goal of the season, with Gabriel Vilardi adding a power-play goal to give Winnipeg a brief lead at 2-1. However, Carolina’s Staal struck again, putting the Hurricanes ahead 3-2 by capitalizing on a shot from Jalen Chatfield in the second period.
The pivotal moment came in the third period when Ehlers, receiving a warm tribute from the Winnipeg crowd, made a crucial no-look pass to Andrei Svechnikov, who extended Carolina’s lead to 4-2. Less than a minute later, Vilardi brought the Jets within one goal, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Hurricanes.
The emotional atmosphere was palpable as Ehlers, who played 674 games for Winnipeg before signing a lucrative six-year, $51 million deal with the Hurricanes, received a standing ovation during a video tribute in the first period. Ehlers acknowledged the fans, reflecting the deep connection he built with the Winnipeg community during his tenure.
This match marks a significant moment for both teams. Carolina’s victory improved their record to 14-5-2, while Winnipeg dropped to 12-8-0. The Hurricanes have now scored three or more goals in each of their last five games, maintaining momentum as they head into their next matchup against the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday.
Next: The Winnipeg Jets will conclude their three-game homestand against the Minnesota Wild on Sunday afternoon, aiming to rally in the absence of their star goaltender. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on how both teams adapt to these significant changes.
