Tens of Thousands Join Ottawa’s 56th Annual Help Santa Toy Parade
UPDATE: Tens of thousands of spirited Ottawans flocked to the streets for the 56th annual Help Santa Toy Parade on December 2, 2023, igniting the holiday season with excitement and community spirit. The parade kicked off at 11 a.m. along a new route down Queen Elizabeth Driveway, showcasing over 65 floats and a specially designed sleigh for Santa Claus.
The event, organized by the Ottawa Professional Firefighters Association, became a heartwarming celebration of giving, featuring vibrant bands, dancers, and classic firetrucks. Parade chair Cameron Taylor expressed gratitude, stating, “We’re happy to be here. The entire team is here having a good time.” Taylor emphasized the crucial role of volunteers who worked tirelessly to bring the event to life.
The parade traveled south from Somerset Street West to Lansdowne Park, concluding at the Christmas Market, where festive activities continued. Along the route, firefighters eagerly collected cash donations and unwrapped toys for the CTV and Move 100’s Toy Mountain Campaign, aiming to deliver joy to children this Christmas. Taylor remarked, “It’s a time when we can all come together and distribute some of the goodness.”
Families like the Saikaleys make the Help Santa Toy Parade an annual holiday tradition. Misty Saikaley, in attendance with her children, Bowie and Norah, shared, “It’s just a nice way to give back to the community and start the festiveness of the season.” For the kids, the parade was all about excitement—Norah was eager to see Santa, while Bowie, who will turn five just before Christmas, was hoping for candy canes. The family brought a pottery making kit and a rock painting gift to contribute.
“It’s important to just give, especially to those that are in need,” Misty added. “And if you have the means, then spread the love.” Taylor welcomed all contributions, stating, “Give what you can, but no amount is too small or too big.”
The festivities are set to continue next weekend, as the Ottawa Professional Firefighters Association will host Santa’s Parade of Lights at 6 p.m. on Saturday in Orléans. This ongoing series of events highlights the community’s commitment to spreading cheer and goodwill during the holiday season.
With the Help Santa Toy Parade drawing massive crowds and fostering a spirit of generosity, Ottawa is undeniably embracing the festive season. Stay tuned for more updates as the celebrations continue!
