NIU Innovation Showcase Unveils Cutting-Edge Research in Technology

Northern Illinois University’s (NIU) College of Engineering and Engineering Technology recently held its annual Innovation Showcase, highlighting groundbreaking research poised to influence industry advancements over the next decade. The event, themed “The Road to 2035: Engineering Breakthroughs Today,” featured presentations from six faculty members and two industry leaders, focusing on innovations in manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and healthcare.

The showcase included notable insights from professors such as Venu Korampally, Mahdi Vaezi, and Vinay Budhraja, who discussed advanced manufacturing techniques alongside a representative from Dukane, an international plastic welding firm. Their panel examined novel approaches to designing and manufacturing materials and products.

Professor Korampally’s research in nanomanufacturing aims to develop advanced sensors and diagnostic devices that are essential for healthcare and environmental monitoring. Professor Vaezi, director of NIU’s Bioplastics Lab, is working on transforming agricultural waste, including hemp, soy, and wheat straw, into biodegradable plastics. This initiative not only minimizes landfill waste but also enhances farmer income while reducing the environmental impact of conventional plastics.

Assistant Professor Budhraja is pioneering methods in 3D printing to create flexible, cost-effective sensors capable of monitoring both plant and human health. These wearable devices leverage artificial intelligence to track critical health indicators such as stress levels, nutrient intake, and disease biomarkers.

Artificial Intelligence Applications in Research

The afternoon segment of the showcase shifted focus to artificial intelligence. Presenters included Professor Lichuan Liu, Associate Professor Christine Nguyen, and Associate Professor Sachit Butail, along with Art Holzknecht, engineering manager at Hiwin, a global manufacturer of machine parts.

Professor Liu, who heads the biomedical engineering program, employs AI to analyze various physiological sounds and signals, such as breathing, crying, and speech. This research aims to facilitate early detection of health issues in children and monitor heart conditions in adults.

Associate Professor Nguyen is applying AI and data analytics to real-world engineering challenges, including the production of cleaner laser-cut metal components and the design of more efficient brake pads. Meanwhile, Professor Butail utilizes mathematical algorithms to investigate group behavior, which has applications in studying ecosystem dynamics and tracking the spread of diseases like COVID-19.

The event also marked a significant milestone for the college with the induction of its inaugural members into the CEET Hall of Fame. The first four honorees included founding Dean Romualdas Kasuba, retired Dean Promod Vohra, and alumni Joe Sener and Divya Behl.

The Innovation Showcase at NIU not only demonstrated the university’s commitment to advancing technology in engineering but also underscored the collaborative efforts between academia and industry in driving future innovations. As these projects progress, they hold the potential to create significant impacts across various sectors, ultimately shaping a more sustainable and technologically advanced future.
