Machado Garry Defeats Muhammad, Sets Sights on Makhachev Title Fight
Ian Machado Garry has moved closer to a welterweight title shot after defeating former champion Belal Muhammad by unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night in Qatar. The event took place on March 9, 2024, at the Ali Bin Hamad al-Attiyah Arena. This victory marks a significant moment in Garry’s career, as he showcased his skills against a highly-ranked opponent.
The bout was notable as it was Muhammad’s first appearance since losing his championship title to Jack Della Maddalena in May 2023. Garry, who is 28 years old and hails from Ireland, demonstrated his striking prowess by landing more significant strikes in each round and successfully defending all seven of Muhammad’s takedown attempts. This performance helped Garry rebound from a previous five-round decision loss to undefeated contender Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 310, which he accepted on short notice.
Garry’s strategy involved using his height and reach advantage effectively, allowing him to connect with jabs and combinations that opened a cut on Muhammad’s left cheek. The fight was briefly paused in the opening minute due to an accidental eye poke from Garry, a situation that Muhammad has faced before. In 2021, a similar incident during his fight with Leon Edwards resulted in an early stoppage due to injury.
With this victory, Garry solidified his position as a rising star in the welterweight division, now sitting at No. 6 in the rankings, while Muhammad, previously ranked No. 2, finds himself on a two-fight losing streak. After the match, Garry expressed his desire to challenge current champion Islam Makhachev, who was in attendance coaching his teammates. Garry called for Makhachev to accept a title fight, stating that he believes he deserves the opportunity next.
The welterweight division remains competitive, with other notable fighters like former champion Kamaru Usman, Michael Morales, and Rakhmonov—who was also present at the event—actively vying for title contention. Rakhmonov has not fought since his victory over Garry, as he has been sidelined due to a knee injury.
Looking ahead, Garry must navigate a path filled with challenges if he is to secure a title shot. Muhammad will need to regroup and string together multiple wins to regain his status in the title picture. As the welterweight division continues to evolve, both fighters will be eager to make their mark in an increasingly competitive landscape.
