UPDATE: The Rotary Santa Claus Parade in Sault Ste. Marie drew families together for a festive celebration on December 2, 2023, amidst light rain and wet snow. The event showcased community spirit as children eagerly collected candy and enjoyed the sights of the holiday season.

Eight-year-old Liam McCourt was particularly excited about the parade, focusing on gathering sweets and catching a glimpse of Santa Claus. Joined by his family, including his grandmother Nancy Parr, Liam was not only looking forward to treats for his family’s Christmas tree but also to sharing with other children around him.

This year’s parade held special significance for many families. Layne Olar, who was celebrating his second birthday just a day before, attended the event with his great-grandmother Denise Hoskins, who reminisced about bringing her daughter to similar events when she was younger. “It’s just to see the smiles on their faces,” Hoskins said, highlighting the emotional connection of the occasion.

Alongside the cheerful atmosphere, participants donned festive attire. Tina Grisdale sported a handmade Santa hat and reindeer mittens, celebrating Christmas with her daughters and granddaughter. “I’ve been coming to Santa parades since I was a child,” said her daughter Amber Desjardins, who appreciates the “community spirit” that this beloved tradition fosters.

The parade featured several local schools and businesses, including Soo Mill, Service Rentals, and St. Mary’s College, all contributing to the vibrant celebration. Despite the weather conditions, spirits remained high as the float carrying Santa waved at excited children, delivering his classic greeting: “Merry Christmas! Ho ho ho!”

Earlier in the day, the inaugural Big Santa Run took place to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters Sault Ste. Marie, adding a charitable layer to the day’s festivities. The parade, which commenced at 3°C, brought the community together, reinforcing bonds through shared joy and festive cheer.

The event underscored the importance of tradition in bringing families together during the holiday season, with many attendees already looking forward to next year’s festivities. As this year’s parade wraps up, local families will carry the memories of laughter, candy, and community spirit into the holiday season.
