The annual Rotary Santa Claus Parade took place in Sault Ste. Marie on December 2, 2023, attracting families eager to celebrate the holiday season. Children and adults alike gathered to enjoy festive floats, candy, and the festive spirit that enveloped the community.

Among the attendees was eight-year-old Liam McCourt, who expressed his enthusiasm for both the sweet treats and the appearance of Santa Claus. “I want to share my candy with my friends,” he said, as he prepared to collect goodies during the event. Liam was accompanied by his family, including his grandmother, Nancy Parr, and his sister, Lily, who participated on the float representing Korah Collegiate and Vocational School.

Another family celebrating was Layne Olar, who marked his second birthday during the parade festivities. Joined by his great-grandmother, Denise Hoskins, and his mother, Nikita Olar, Layne’s birthday provided an extra reason to celebrate. Denise reflected on the importance of family traditions, noting, “It’s just to see the smiles on their faces.”

Many attendees embraced the festive atmosphere, including Tina Grisdale, who wore a handmade Christmas outfit complete with a crocheted Santa hat and red scarf. She was joined by her daughters, Amber Desjardins and Megan Grisdale, as well as her husband and granddaughter. Amber, who has been attending the Santa parade since she was a child, emphasized the joy of community spirit brought by the event. “I love the high energy of the participants,” she remarked, highlighting the joy of those who waved and danced along the parade route.

Despite the rainy and snowy weather, with temperatures hovering around 3°C, the parade proceeded with enthusiasm. Schools such as St. Mary’s French Immersion, Superior Heights Collegiate and Vocational School, and St. Mary’s College, alongside local businesses and organizations like Soo Mill, Service Rentals, and Sault Cycling Club, participated in the celebration.

As the parade moved past the intersection of Queen Street and East Street, Santa Claus greeted excited children with a simple but heartfelt “Merry Christmas! Ho ho ho,” as he waved from his float.

Preceding the parade, the inaugural Big Santa Run took place, benefiting Big Brothers Big Sisters Sault Ste. Marie. This event further emphasized the community’s commitment to supporting local causes while celebrating the joyful spirit of the season.

The Rotary Santa Claus Parade continues to be a cherished tradition in Sault Ste. Marie, bringing families together and fostering a sense of community during the holiday season.
