Senior Samantha Smith Earns Student of the Month at Newman High
Samantha Smith, a senior at Newman Central Catholic High School, has been honored as the student of the month for November 2023. This recognition highlights her academic achievements and involvement in extracurricular activities, showcasing her commitment to personal and community growth.
In her own words, Samantha identifies AP Statistics, taught by Mrs. Connie Royer, as her favorite class. She appreciates the engaging teaching style that fosters a comprehensive understanding of the material. “Mrs. Royer does a great job of teaching all of the material, as well as making sure we are all understanding it,” Samantha said. She enjoys the hands-on activities that complement her learning experience, making the class both interesting and enjoyable.
Looking ahead, Samantha has ambitious plans post-graduation. She intends to study exercise science at a four-year university, with her top choice being the University of Alabama. After completing her undergraduate degree, she aspires to attend physical therapy school. In addition to her studies, Samantha hopes to manage a gymnastics team and participate in a study abroad program.
Samantha’s dedication extends beyond academics. She has been involved in competitive gymnastics for over 15 years, training more than 20 hours a week. This commitment has instilled a strong work ethic and time management skills in her. Additionally, Samantha is active in the Dixon Sister Cities Association, having traveled to Herzberg, Germany, during her freshman year. She values the friendships and cultural understanding gained through this program.
A particularly memorable experience for Samantha was the Kairos retreat during her junior year. She describes this retreat as the most significant moment of her high school journey. “Now I have the honor of being a Kairos leader for this year’s junior class,” she noted, emphasizing the impact this experience has had on her life.
As she prepares for her future, Samantha’s passion for physical therapy has solidified through practical experiences, including job-shadowing at ORS Physical Therapy in Dixon. Her ultimate goal is to graduate with her bachelor’s degree in exercise science and further her education in physical therapy.
Samantha Smith’s recognition as student of the month reflects not only her academic success but also her dedication to personal growth and community service. Her journey serves as an inspiring example for her peers at Newman Central Catholic High School.
