The Plano Library is actively engaging the community with a care package drive aimed at supporting individuals experiencing homelessness. Running until December 15, the initiative seeks donations of essential items such as socks, razors, mini lotion bottles, travel-size shampoo and conditioner, hand sanitizer, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, period products, gloves, and winter hats. Volunteers from Operation Jesus will personally distribute these care packages to homeless individuals in downtown Chicago on Christmas morning.

In addition to the care package drive, the library is hosting a variety of programs for both adults and children throughout December. These programs are designed to foster creativity and community engagement while providing opportunities for learning and connection.

Adult Programs at the Plano Library

Adults can participate in several upcoming events. Registration for these programs can be completed by calling 630-552-2009.

One of the highlights is the “Crafts to Go – Winter Birdhouse” taking place on December 6. This event offers free craft kits for high school students and adults on a first-come, first-served basis, available on the first Saturday of each month.

On December 9, the library will offer a Technology Help Desk from 12:00 to 13:00, providing a free opportunity to meet with tech expert Steve Goodwin. Attendees are encouraged to bring their devices for personalized assistance.

For aspiring writers, the Writers’ Group will meet on December 11 from 18:30 to 20:00. Participants can share their work and receive feedback. The meeting is accessible both in person and via Zoom, with no registration required.

Another impactful program, “New Life for Old Bags,” will occur on December 13 from 10:30 to 12:00. Participants will transform plastic shopping bags into sleeping mats for the homeless. Those interested can contact Ceil Carey at [email protected] or 708-846-1704 for more information.

The Knit and Crochet Group meets every Monday from 16:00 to 18:00 and welcomes all ages. This group, led by crochet artist Karen Perez, encourages participants to either learn or share their skills.

For those who prefer virtual gatherings, a Zoom Knit and Crochet Group meets every Thursday from 10:00 to 12:00, providing a space for participants to work on their projects and discuss various techniques.

Children’s Programs Attract Young Creatives

The Plano Library also offers engaging programs for children. Parents can register their children for these activities by calling 630-552-2025.

On November 24, the library invites children of all ages to “Legos at the Library,” available from 14:00 to 15:00 or 18:00 to 19:00. This event allows children to unleash their creativity with provided Legos, although children under six must be accompanied by an adult.

“Bookworms,” scheduled for November 25, features storytime, snacks, and crafts for independent students in grades K-3. This session requires registration, and parents are encouraged to secure a spot for their child.

For older students, “Pizza & Pages” takes place on December 9 from 17:00 to 17:45. Participants in grades 7-9 will discuss a pre-selected book while enjoying pizza.

Another exciting offering is “Preschool Art Explorers” on December 10 from 18:00 to 18:45. Children ages 3-5 can explore art materials and create their own artworks, with parents required to remain in the Kids’ Library during the program.

Finally, the “Create Art with Petite Palette” class invites young artists aged 6-18 to participate in acrylic painting sessions at a cost of $5 each, with classes held at different times on December 10.

With these initiatives, the Plano Library is not only fostering creativity among community members but also addressing critical social needs through the care package drive. This multifaceted approach highlights the library’s commitment to supporting both individual development and community welfare.
