Residents of Nanaimo are urged to remain vigilant following reports of individuals falsely claiming to be representatives of the Canadian Red Cross soliciting donations door-to-door. The Nanaimo RCMP issued a warning on November 21, 2025, after receiving multiple complaints regarding these suspicious activities.

According to police, these impersonators approached residents under the guise of fundraising for the Red Cross. The organization has clarified that its canvassers do not request cash or one-time donations. Those approached for contributions are advised to verify the legitimacy of the fundraising by contacting the Red Cross at 1-800-418-1111.

This incident marks a continuation of fraudulent activities exploiting the charity’s name in the Nanaimo area. In October, local authorities reported similar cases involving two men who were reported canvassing on Uplands Drive. Despite investigations, the suspects were not located.

The Canadian Red Cross has emphasized that legitimate canvassers are easily identifiable. They wear visible Red Cross attire, carry electronic devices such as tablets or iPads, and display official identification badges. Additionally, they do not accept cash and only enroll individuals in monthly donation plans.

To protect themselves, residents are encouraged to contact the Red Cross directly for verification or to make donations through the organization’s official website. The Red Cross also advises against clicking on links in unsolicited emails or text messages, as scammers often create a sense of urgency to manipulate potential victims, particularly during disasters or holiday seasons.

Residents who encounter any suspicious canvassers should report the incident to Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or notify the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. By remaining cautious and vigilant, individuals can contribute to the effort of protecting the community from fraudulent activities.
