Urgent Snowfall Hits Calgary, Creates Slippery Driving Conditions

UPDATE: A significant overnight snowfall has plunged Calgary into slippery conditions this morning, creating hazardous driving situations for commuters. Environment Canada has issued warnings and predicts accumulations of 5 to 10 centimetres in Calgary, with southern areas expecting between 10 and 20 centimetres of snow.

The snowfall is expected to intensify throughout the day before tapering off by the evening. A snowfall warning has been activated for several regions in southern Alberta, including Lethbridge, Taber, Cardston, Fort Macleod, and Pincher Creek. Commuters should remain alert as conditions are projected to worsen during peak travel hours.

Officials from Calgary Transit have confirmed that all snow detours will be in effect for the morning commute, aiming to alleviate traffic risks caused by stuck buses. A comprehensive list of affected bus routes is available on the Calgary Transit website.

“Activating these detours city-wide will reduce risks of stuck buses and slowdowns for customers and commuters,” the city stated in a release.

Motorists are urged to monitor the rapidly changing weather conditions. Snow-covered roads, icy patches, and reduced visibility are expected to complicate travel. “Prepare yourself before you head out, leave plenty of time to get to where you need to go, and adapt to the changing weather,” officials advised.

Despite the weather challenges, all regular school bus routes in Calgary will remain operational and unaffected by the detours.

As the snowfall progresses, residents are encouraged to stay updated with local news and official channels for the latest developments. Share this urgent update to keep your friends and family informed about the conditions impacting Calgary today.
