Zolo’s ranking is based on eight vital factors that matter to residents: home price, household income, population growth, unemployment rate, crime rate, access to healthcare, sunny days, and walkability. Currently, the benchmark home price in Calgary is $567,900, and the cost of living is 7% lower than the national average, making it an attractive option for families and individuals seeking affordability.
The average household income in Calgary stands at $129,200 per year. The city is known for its booming industries, including aerospace, energy, and technology, drawing many Canadians to the region. This influx is driven by the search for lower home prices and abundant job opportunities.
According to Zolo, Calgary excels in family-friendly amenities, featuring top-notch recreation facilities and housing Alberta’s Children’s Hospital, recently recognized as one of the best pediatric hospitals in the world. With 333 sunny days annually and a walkability score of 39, Calgary offers an appealing outdoor lifestyle that resonates with many residents.
The city’s Crime Severity Index stands at 63.3, and the unemployment rate holds steady at 8%, further highlighting Calgary’s stability and safety. Notably, Calgary is the only city from Alberta to secure a spot on this coveted list.
In the rankings, Guelph & District took the top position, praised for its high household income, low unemployment, and safety. Saskatoon and Halifax followed closely in second and third place, respectively, commended for affordable housing and vibrant outdoor lifestyles.
