Police Respond to 14 Impaired Driving Complaints in 3 Days
URGENT UPDATE: The Waterloo Regional Police Service is sounding the alarm as they report a staggering spike in impaired driving complaints, responding to 14 incidents over just three days. This marks a shocking 250% increase compared to the previous three-day period.
Between Friday and Sunday, police noted that six of these incidents occurred in Cambridge, while Kitchener and Waterloo each reported three complaints. Additionally, North Dumfries and Wilmot Townships had one complaint each.
The police revealed that alcohol-related collisions were involved in four cases, with drug impairment detected in two instances. Alarmingly, one complaint involved a novice driver with a blood alcohol level above zero, raising serious concerns about road safety in the region.
Notably, at 5 a.m. on Saturday, officers arrested a driver on the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 after reports of a vehicle swerving and slowing down. The driver was charged with operation while impaired and failure to comply with demand.
In a separate incident later that same day, around 5:30 p.m., a driver in Kitchener struck a parked vehicle and veered into oncoming traffic, nearly colliding with other vehicles and a Grand River Transit bus. This reckless driver was charged with operation while impaired, failure to stop after an accident, and dangerous operation.
Authorities urge the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious driving behavior. The increase in impaired driving incidents highlights an urgent need for awareness and preventive measures to ensure the safety of all road users. Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops.
