Thomas King Reveals He’s Not Indigenous, Sparks Controversy
BREAKING: Celebrated author Thomas King has revealed that he is not Indigenous, a shocking announcement that is expected to ignite a significant backlash. In a candid essay published in Globe and Mail, the 82-year-old Canadian writer expressed his devastation upon learning that he has no Cherokee ancestry, a belief he held for nearly his entire life.
Just weeks ago, King discovered through an investigation by the Tribal Alliance Against Frauds, with assistance from a University of British Columbia scholar, that his claims of Indigenous heritage were unfounded. “At 82, I feel as though I’ve been ripped in half,” King wrote, describing the emotional toll of this revelation.
This news comes as King reflects on his past, where he was led to believe he had Cherokee roots based on his mother’s accounts. King stated, “Not the Indian I had in mind. Not an Indian at all.” His essay outlines the personal journey he undertook to uncover the truth about his ancestry, which began after he heard rumors questioning his heritage several years ago.
King’s literary contributions include impactful works such as 2003’s The Truth About Stories: A Native Narrative and 2012’s The Inconvenient Indian: A Curious Account of Native People in North America. His writings have earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious Order of Canada and the RBC Taylor Prize for Non-Fiction.
The author anticipates a “firestorm” of emotions from the public, including anger and disbelief. He expressed concerns about the future of his reputation and career, stating, “After it is over I will sort through rubble to see if there is anything left.”
King’s publisher, HarperCollins Canada, has been proud to support his work for over 30 years but has yet to comment on this latest controversy.
As conversations about identity and heritage escalate, King’s experience highlights broader discussions about Indigenous representation and authenticity in literature. His insight into the complexities of identity and the struggle for recognition resonates deeply within communities, making this revelation particularly poignant.
What happens next remains uncertain, but King’s commitment to supporting Indigenous artists and causes endures, despite the challenges he faces in the wake of this revelation.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as reactions unfold across social media and the literary community.
