American Airlines Unveils Top International Routes for December 2025
American Airlines has updated its international route network for December 2025, revealing a new top destination. The airline, which holds the title of the world’s largest carrier by various measures, now ranks Dallas/Fort Worth to Cancun as its busiest international route. This shift reflects a broader strategy focusing on short-haul international markets, despite American’s position as a leader in flights rather than passenger volume.
According to data from Cirium Diio, the airline plans to operate an average of 394 daily international departures in December, marking a 5% increase from the previous year. American Airlines now accounts for more than one in six international services from the United States, emphasizing its significant presence in the global aviation market.
Top Routes and Changes in Rankings
An analysis of American’s December 2025 network reveals 284 international airport pairs serviced from 21 hubs and focus cities. The airline is set to connect with 119 non-U.S. airports across 56 countries during the festive month. The following routes top the list based on the number of one-way flights:
1. Dallas/Fort Worth to Cancun: 225 flights
2. Miami to Havana: 177 flights
3. Dallas/Fort Worth to Monterrey: 169 flights
4. Miami to Nassau: 152 flights
5. Dallas/Fort Worth to Mexico City: 150 flights
6. New York LaGuardia to Toronto Pearson: 148 flights
7. Miami to Santo Domingo: 146 flights
8. Chicago O’Hare to Toronto Pearson: 142 flights
9. Dallas/Fort Worth to Los Cabos: 139 flights
10. Miami to Cancun: 135 flights
Interestingly, Dallas/Fort Worth to Cancun has emerged as the most frequented route, overtaking Miami to Havana, which previously held the top position. Despite both routes seeing a decrease in flight numbers compared to last year, the reduction for the Havana route was particularly notable, with a decline of 19%.
Market Dynamics and Passenger Insights
The Dallas/Fort Worth to Cancun route has a long-standing history, with American Airlines serving this market for over 35 years. To date, the airline has transported more than 15 million passengers on this route. Between August 2024 and July 2025, American Airlines carried 828,000 round-trip passengers, achieving an impressive seat occupancy rate of 89%.
While competing with airlines such as Frontier and Spirit, American Airlines has managed to capture a significant portion of the market share, handling approximately 75% of passengers on this route. Booking data indicates that around 70% of these travelers connected to other flights at Dallas/Fort Worth, the second-busiest airline hub in the United States.
Notable connections include Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and various other cities, reflecting the extensive reach of American Airlines’ network. The introduction of nonstop flights from Oklahoma City to Cancun on November 8, 2025, further enhances the airline’s offerings.
The December 2025 route analysis also highlights a shift in rankings among American Airlines’ services. Chicago O’Hare to Toronto Pearson has made its debut in the top ten, displacing Charlotte to Cancun. This route covers 379 nautical miles (approximately 702 km) each way and has expanded from 122 monthly departures to 142, a growth of 16% year-over-year.
This increase is part of American Airlines’ broader revitalization strategy at O’Hare, where overall activity has risen by 30% compared to the previous year. International departures from the airport have increased by an impressive 41%, marking the highest volume of international flights from O’Hare in a decade.
American Airlines continues to adapt its international operations, responding to market demand while strengthening its position in the competitive landscape of global air travel.
