Fifteen-year-old violist Daniel Milliea is preparing for a significant performance at Carnegie Hall in New York City on December 20, 2023. After achieving third place in the prestigious international talent competition American Protégé, Milliea has been invited to showcase his talent alongside musicians from ten countries.

Milliea, who hails from the Elsipogtog First Nation, expressed his excitement and nervousness as he practices in the music room of Bonar Law High School. Comparing the acoustics of his school to the renowned concert hall, he remarked, “It’s nerve-racking, my palms get sweaty.” Despite his nerves, Milliea feels prepared for the big day, stating, “I feel like I’m prepared but I can go beyond that.”

Guidance and Growth

Under the tutelage of his long-time instructor, Swan Serna, Milliea practices diligently, dedicating three hours each day to mastering his craft. Serna, who leads the Sistema’s Elsipogtog Centre, recognized Milliea’s potential early on when he joined the youth orchestra program in first grade. Serna noted Milliea’s dedication and ability to produce a “nice sound.”

Originally a violinist, Milliea transitioned to the viola, an instrument that Serna believes complements his character and personality. “I think that the instrument is just suited perfectly for him,” Serna said. “He is made for this.”

A Unique Opportunity

When Serna encouraged Milliea to enter the talent competition, he also decided to participate, qualifying to perform at Carnegie Hall on the same day as his student. “It’s just a little bit crazy,” Serna remarked. He plans to present an original piece composed for the violin, while Milliea will perform the second movement of Telemann’s Viola Concerto.

Milliea views this performance not just as a personal achievement but as an opportunity to inspire others in his community. “Teaching my other generations of Indigenous people, I think that will make me accomplished for what path I’m going down right now,” he shared. His ambition extends to aspirations of becoming a conductor in the future.

In their years of collaboration, Milliea has also imparted lessons to Serna beyond music. One notable moment occurred when Milliea requested to arrive late to a lesson for personal reflection and prayer. Serna described this as a powerful teaching moment, highlighting the importance of spirituality in their musical journey.

As the performance date approaches, Milliea remains focused on his preparations. If nerves arise during the performance, he plans to utilize a breathing technique taught by his mother. Above all, he wants to represent his culture through his music, stating, “I think it’s important because many other people are going through a lot, especially my community. And seeing me going to Carnegie Hall will probably put warmth into their hearts.”

As Milliea gears up for this remarkable event, his journey exemplifies not only his dedication as a musician but also his commitment to his roots and community.
