Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Launches with New Balloons and Stars
The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade commenced on November 23, 2023, in New York City, showcasing a vibrant array of new balloons and floats. Among the highlights are balloons featuring Buzz Lightyear and Pac-Man, alongside floats representing Labubu and Lego. The parade is set to begin at 08:30 EST, starting from Manhattan’s Upper West Side and concluding at Macy’s flagship store on 34th Street.
Weather conditions are expected to be chilly, with temperatures hovering in the 40s Fahrenheit. Wind gusts could reach between 25 mph (40 kph) and 30 mph (48 kph), potentially affecting the parade’s balloon display. According to David Stark, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in New York, city regulations prevent the flying of full-size balloons if sustained winds exceed 23 mph (37 kph) or gusts surpass 35 mph (56 kph). In the history of the parade, balloons have been grounded only once, in 1971, though winds have occasionally forced them to fly lower.
Authorities are monitoring the weather closely, with Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stating that a decision regarding balloon adjustments will be made on Thursday morning. She assured the public that there are no known credible threats to the event, although thousands of police officers will be present along the route to ensure safety. Past parades have seen protests, particularly from pro-Palestinian groups, but Tisch confirmed that police are prepared for any similar situations this year.
The parade will not only feature new balloons but also an exciting lineup of performances. Stars such as Cynthia Erivo, Conan Gray, Lainey Wilson, and Foreigner are among the many artists set to entertain attendees. The event will also include performances by the iconic Radio City Rockettes and cast members from popular Broadway shows, including “Buena Vista Social Club” and “Ragtime.”
A new addition to this year’s lineup is a large onion carriage from the world of “Shrek,” featuring eight beloved characters. The fictional girl group from the Netflix series “KPop Demon Hunters” will also make an appearance, showcasing characters Derpy Tiger and Sussie in balloon form.
The parade will be broadcast live on NBC, with renowned hosts Savannah Guthrie, Al Roker, and former colleague Hoda Kotb. Additionally, the event will be simulcast on NBC’s Peacock streaming service, expanding its reach to audiences at home.
As the parade unfolds, it promises to be a festive celebration, drawing thousands of spectators eager to witness the spectacle that has become a cherished Thanksgiving tradition.
