URGENT UPDATE: A Campbell River man has been fined $5,000 for illegally harvesting 1,750 pounds of clams, a serious violation under the Fisheries Act. On November 12, 2023, Albert Joseph Thomas Blaney was convicted of illegal possession and fishing without a license, marking a significant enforcement action by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO).

The conviction stems from an incident in January 2023, when DFO officers discovered the clams packed in 22 sacks in Blaney’s vehicle during a routine inspection at the Heriot Bay terminal on Quadra Island. The sacks contained no tags indicating a lawful harvest under any commercial shellfish license, raising serious concerns about the sustainability of local marine resources.

According to DFO, unlicensed harvesting threatens not only the clam population but also the economic stability of coastal communities, which rely on licensed fisheries for their livelihoods. The DFO stated,

“Unlicensed harvesting can deplete the resource, remove the opportunity for other licensed harvesters, and threaten the significant economic and social benefit to coastal communities.”

Moreover, the potential health risks associated with consuming shellfish harvested from contaminated areas cannot be overlooked. DFO warns that such shellfish pose serious health risks, which could lead to illness or even fatalities for consumers.

DFO confirmed that the illegal harvesting activities occurred within the territory of the Klahoose First Nation, who supported the investigation into Blaney’s actions. The department emphasizes its commitment to protecting marine resources and urges the public to report any illegal fishing activities.

Anyone with information about violations of the Fisheries Act can call the DFO Pacific Region’s toll-free violation reporting line at 1-800-465-4336 or email details to [email protected].

This case underscores the importance of adhering to fishing regulations to ensure sustainability and the health of coastal ecosystems. Authorities are actively working to prevent further illegal activities that threaten both marine life and the communities that depend on them.
