Brandon Ingram Sparks Toronto Raptors’ Offensive Transformation
The Toronto Raptors showcased their strategic acquisition of Brandon Ingram during a thrilling encounter against the Indiana Pacers on March 19, 2025. With just 0.6 seconds remaining on the clock, Ingram executed a challenging pull-up jumper over Pascal Siakam, sealing a victory for the Raptors. This moment encapsulated the reason behind the team’s decision to trade for Ingram: his ability to make difficult shots.
Ingram’s scoring talent has not only elevated his own performance but has also significantly enhanced the Raptors’ overall offensive production. The team has experienced a remarkable turnaround, soaring from 26th in offensive rating last season to seventh in the early stages of the current campaign. This transformation can be attributed to Ingram’s scoring prowess and its positive ripple effects on his teammates.
Offensive Dynamics and Improvements
Historically, the Raptors have struggled in halfcourt situations, consistently ranking among the bottom six teams in this area for four consecutive seasons. However, through 19 games in the current season, the Raptors have emerged as one of the league’s top teams in halfcourt offense, averaging 103.2 points per 100 plays, well above the league average of 97.4. This marks a significant improvement, as the only season in franchise history where they were further above the league average was in 2009-10.
The addition of Ingram has filled a notable gap in the team’s roster. Previously, the Raptors lacked a player capable of creating his own shot against a set defense. Ingram, with his skill set, not only generates scoring opportunities but also instills confidence in his teammates. For instance, Scottie Barnes, who was the Raptors’ primary mid-range shooter last season, has seen his efficiency improve dramatically. Barnes’ true shooting percentage has surged to 59.3%, a clear reflection of his improved shot selection and adjusted role.
Impact on Teammates’ Performance
Last season, Barnes faced challenges with a shooting percentage of only 39.6% on mid-range attempts. In contrast, he now benefits from a more conducive offensive environment. His frequency of operating in transition, rolling to the basket, and cutting has increased, allowing him to finish more effectively around the rim. This season, he is scoring an additional basket per game in the restricted area compared to last year.
Similarly, RJ Barrett has thrived under the new offensive scheme. With a reduction in his on-ball responsibilities, Barrett has shifted his focus to more efficient scoring opportunities. His true shooting percentage has climbed to an impressive 60.4%, up from 54.7% last season. Barrett’s improved efficiency is underscored by his success on cuts, where he has scored on 15 of 20 shot attempts.
The Raptors’ offensive adjustments have allowed all three of Toronto’s top scorers to thrive in their optimal roles. Despite concerns among analysts regarding the impact of Ingram’s isolation-heavy playing style on the team’s dynamics, coach Darko Rajaković‘s fast-paced offensive system has integrated seamlessly with Ingram’s skill set. He has adapted to the team’s needs, leading the league in points per possession from screens.
Ingram’s ability to create scoring opportunities not only for himself but also for his teammates has resulted in a more fluid and dynamic offensive approach for the Raptors. As the team prepares to face formidable opponents, including the Miami Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder, it will be crucial to see how far this revitalized offensive strategy can carry them through the season.
The Raptors are generating excitement with an entertaining style of basketball that had been missing in recent years. The upcoming games will serve as a litmus test for the team’s offensive capabilities against some of the league’s best defenses, marking a pivotal moment in their quest for success this season.
