A Brandon plumbing company has faced legal repercussions following the tragic death of an employee who was exposed to toxic gas. On May 28, 2025, Lockhart Plumbing and Heating Ltd. pleaded guilty to failing to comply with safety regulations, specifically regarding the proper training and supervision of their workers.

The incident occurred on October 19, 2022, when a plumber was dispatched to a residence to investigate a sewer odour. While attempting to clear a drain, the worker encountered hydrogen sulphide, a hazardous gas that can be lethal even in low concentrations. Unfortunately, the employee did not have the necessary training to handle such a dangerous substance, which led to the fatal exposure.

In response to the case, Manitoba Labour and Immigration emphasized the critical need for employers to ensure that their staff are adequately informed about potential hazards. According to the department, compliance with the Workplace Safety and Health Act is essential to safeguarding employees in environments where they may face risks.

The court imposed a fine of $5,000 on Lockhart Plumbing and Heating Ltd. and ordered an additional $2,500 to be paid to the Workplace Safety and Health Education Fund. This penalty serves as a reminder to all employers about their responsibilities under provincial safety laws.

Workplace Safety and Health investigators found that the lack of training and supervision contributed significantly to the employee’s exposure to hydrogen sulphide. The gas, produced by decaying organic material, poses serious health risks, including the potential for fatality.
