Canadian Golfers Discover Nashville’s Charm Amid Political Tensions
In March 2025, two Canadian golfers ventured to Nashville, Tennessee, seeking a break from the political turmoil surrounding U.S. President Donald Trump and his controversial trade policies. Despite the backdrop of rising tensions, the pair found an unexpectedly warm welcome in a city often characterized by its vibrant music scene and rich culinary offerings.
Golf and Southern Hospitality
Traveling from Alberta, the two friends, including Norman, aimed to enjoy a week filled with golf and exploration. Nashville, a city that balances its deep red state politics with a more moderate, purple urban identity, became their destination of choice. They sought to experience the region as an alternative to more conventional sunbelt locales like Florida and Arizona.
The weather in Nashville during March can be unpredictable, with temperatures ranging from cool to pleasantly warm. Just a week before their arrival, the city recorded nearly seven inches of rain. Despite these conditions, the local golf courses remained open, enticing the two enthusiastic golfers to make the most of their trip.
Middle Tennessee boasts 61 golf courses, many of which are private. However, 33 of these are open to visitors, providing ample options for those wanting to tee off. The duo set their sights on playing several courses while indulging in the city’s renowned southern cuisine and lively music scene.
Exploring Nashville’s Culinary and Musical Landscape
While their primary focus was golf, Norman and his friend were eager to immerse themselves in Nashville’s culinary delights. Local eateries offer a variety of southern dishes, from hot chicken to barbecue, allowing them to experience the region’s flavors. As they navigated through the city, they also took the time to enjoy live music performances, an integral part of Nashville’s cultural identity.
Their trip illustrated a broader narrative about the ability to find common ground amidst differing political views. The residents of Nashville, rather than focusing on the divisive rhetoric coming from Washington, D.C., displayed a welcoming spirit toward their Canadian visitors. This contrast served as a reminder that, while politics can create barriers, personal connections and shared experiences can bridge divides.
As their week unfolded, Norman and his companion not only honed their golfing skills but also created lasting memories in a city that exceeded their expectations. Their journey stands as a testament to the power of travel and the unifying force of hospitality, even when faced with external challenges.
