Pope Leo XIV Appoints Bishop Stephen Hero as Edmonton Archbishop
BREAKING: Pope Leo XIV has officially appointed Bishop Stephen Hero as the new Archbishop of Edmonton, a significant transition for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Prince Albert. The announcement was made on November 21, 2023, marking the end of an era for the Diocese as they prepare for the change in leadership.
Bishop Hero, who has served as the Bishop of Prince Albert since March 25, 2021, expressed deep gratitude for the trust placed in him for this new mission. “I am very humbled and grateful for the trust placed in me to take up this new mission in the Church and to serve in a community that is close to my heart,” he stated in a letter addressed to the Archdiocese of Edmonton.
The Prince Albert Catholic School Division has voiced its sadness over Hero’s departure, especially after the loss of the late Bishop Albert Thevanot earlier this year. Education director Lorel Trumier remarked, “We have been so blessed with our bishops,” highlighting Hero’s engagement with the Saskatchewan Catholic School Board Association. Trumier also noted, “I can’t think of a better person for this appointment.”
Hero, originally from Quebec but raised in Edmonton, has a strong connection to the community. His ordination as a priest for the Archdiocese of Edmonton occurred in 2000. The upcoming installation ceremony is set for January 23, 2024, at St. Joseph’s Basilica, where he will officially take on his new role.
While the Diocese prepares for this change, Hero remains committed to his current responsibilities. “You welcomed me with such kindness when I was ordained your Bishop on June 11, 2021,” he reflected, expressing his appreciation for the diverse communities he has served. “There is a river that flows from Edmonton to Prince Albert that will always be a sign to me of the connection between us.”
As Bishop Hero transitions to his new position, the Prince Albert Catholic School Division will continue to support him, acknowledging the impact he has had on Catholic education in the province. “We will continue to pray for his successes here in his new appointment,” Trumier concluded, emphasizing the bonds he has built within the community.
This leadership change signifies a new chapter for both the Diocese of Prince Albert and the Archdiocese of Edmonton, with Hero’s roots and experiences poised to influence the future of Catholic education and community outreach. Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops.
