URGENT UPDATE: A significant payroll glitch at the Greater Essex County District School Board (GECDSB) has been resolved, but its impact continues to reverberate among employees. Earlier today, some staff members in Windsor, Ontario, reported not receiving their paychecks, leading to widespread concern.

According to Madeline McEachern, spokesperson for the GECDSB, affected employees will receive their salaries by the end of the day, specifically between 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Friday, December 15, 2023, which is their scheduled payday. McEachern confirmed that a technical error caused the pay disruption but did not disclose the exact number of impacted employees.

The situation is especially pressing for the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF) members, including over 900 support staff represented by president Fran Van Gent. “It was a lot of people that did not get paid today,” Van Gent stated, highlighting the urgency of the issue. Although the board has addressed the glitch, the timing—just three weeks before Christmas—adds emotional weight to the situation.

Van Gent noted, “Our bargaining unit is not known for the highest pay; we are known as one of the lowest paid. This glitch is having a huge, large impact.” The union leader praised the board’s communication efforts throughout the day, emphasizing that this was simply an unfortunate mistake.

As the clock ticks down to payday, employees across the board are anxiously awaiting their salaries. The resolution of the glitch brings some relief, but the emotional stress felt by those impacted remains a significant concern.

Authorities reaffirm their commitment to ensuring that such errors do not happen again, but for now, the focus is on getting everyone their due pay as swiftly as possible. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
