Prince Albert Raiders Win 2-1 as Sivertson Scores Stunning Game-Winner
UPDATE: In a thrilling showdown on July 15, 2025, the Prince Albert Raiders clinched a nail-biting 2-1 victory against the Brandon Wheat Kings thanks to a spectacular game-winning goal from forward Jonah Sivertson.
The decisive moment came early in the third period at the Art Hauser Centre when Sivertson showcased his impressive skills. After a defensive breakdown by the Wheat Kings, he seized the puck, outmaneuvered defenders, and left goaltender Filip Ruzicka scrambling, scoring what many are calling the team’s Goal of the Year.
“Just tremendous puck protection,” said Raiders coach Ryan McDonald. “Jonah protects the puck so well with his big frame, and he’s magic six feet around the net.”
With the game tied at 1-1, Sivertson’s striking goal came shortly after the Raiders successfully killed off a penalty. The Wheat Kings’ Gunnar Gleasman collided with teammate Daniil Skvortsov, allowing Tanner Howe to poke the puck free to Sivertson. He deftly avoided Wheat Kings’ defender Max Lavoie, maneuvering around him before slipping the puck past Ruzicka.
Despite a strong performance from both teams, including Dimitri Fortin, who saved 34 of 35 shots for the Raiders, the Wheat Kings struggled to capitalize on their opportunities. They managed to fire 35 shots at Fortin but could only find the net once, with Nicholas Johnson scoring early in the first period.
“He made some big saves at key moments,” McDonald praised Fortin’s performance. “(He) gave us an opportunity to win.”
The Raiders’ victory keeps them neck-and-neck with the Edmonton Oil Kings for the top position in the Western Hockey League’s Eastern Conference, both teams currently holding 38 points in the standings. However, the Oil Kings have played four more games than Prince Albert.
As the clock wound down in the third, the Raiders dominated possession, preventing the Wheat Kings from breaking out into the neutral zone. With just seconds left, the Wheat Kings struggled to generate any real scoring chances.
Looking ahead, the Raiders are set to face the Medicine Hat Tigers on Saturday night at 7 p.m., following the Tigers’ impressive 9-3 victory over Saskatoon. This match is part of the exciting Cobra Chicken Night event.
With the Raiders continuing to build momentum, fans are eager to see if Sivertson can replicate his game-winning performance in the upcoming match. The energy in the Art Hauser Centre is expected to be electric as the team aims for yet another win.
