Olympic Cross-Country Ski Trials Shift to Vernon Amid Snow Crisis

URGENT UPDATE: Canada’s cross-country ski trials for the 2026 Olympic Games have been moved from Prince George to Vernon, B.C. due to poor snow conditions that made it impossible to guarantee quality courses for this critical qualification event. The trials will still take place on the scheduled dates of December 13-17, 2023 at the Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre.

Officials from Nordiq Canada announced the change earlier today, citing the lack of suitable snow in Prince George as the primary reason. “With no flexibility in the competition timeline, and Sovereign Lake receiving sufficient natural snow accumulation, we had to make this decision,” stated Beckie Scott, CEO of Nordiq Canada.

This shift is vital for athletes vying for a spot on the Canadian team competing in the Olympic Games, which commence with opening ceremonies on February 6, 2026, in Milan-Cortina, Italy. Cross-country skiing events will begin the next day and continue until the closing ceremonies on February 22.

Scott expressed gratitude toward the Prince George community and the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club for their efforts in preparing for the event. “Their commitment, professionalism, and passion reflect why Prince George is recognized as a world-class Nordic venue. Unfortunately, weather is the one factor none of us can control,” she remarked.

The decision to relocate the trials underscores the importance of ensuring optimal conditions for athletes during the qualification process. Athletes like Katherine Stewart-Jones, who recently competed in a World Cup event, will now have the opportunity to race in a venue known for its reliable snow conditions. “Sovereign Lake has a strong history of hosting high-quality competitions, and we are confident it will provide the conditions our athletes need,” Scott added.

This change is not just logistical; it impacts the sporting community at large, as athletes prepare intensively for this prestigious event. Canada has previously won two gold medals and one silver in Olympic cross-country skiing, a legacy that these trials aim to build upon.

As the December dates approach, all eyes will be on the Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre, where athletes will showcase their skills in hopes of securing a coveted Olympic berth.
