B.C. Family Revives Classic Fast Fords with Passion and Skill

A family in British Columbia is keeping the spirit of classic fast Fords alive through their passion for vintage automobiles. Daniel Fonseka, a 24-year-old mechanic from Mission, owns three notable models: a Ford Cortina Mk I, a modified Cortina Mk II, and a 1969 Ford Escort 1600 Mexico. Though these cars collectively produce less horsepower than modern performance vehicles, they embody a rich history and a commitment to motorsport.

The journey began when Daniel’s father, David Fonseka, considered selling the Cortina Mk I due to its demanding nature. “My mom said, ‘Sell the car, we’ll go travelling!’” Daniel recalls. “I saw the for-sale listing and was like, ‘Uh, no, absolutely not.’ So I bought it off of him instead.” This decision marked the start of Daniel’s deep connection with these classic vehicles, a passion he inherited from his father.

Classic Models with Unique Histories

David Fonseka grew up in Singapore, where Australian-made Fords were once a popular choice due to their small engine sizes. As the Japanese automotive market expanded, these vehicles became staples in many households. However, the humid climate in Singapore posed challenges for the small Fords, often requiring local owners to be more mechanically savvy than their counterparts in the United Kingdom.

The collection features the Mk I, originally a 1500 GT, now upgraded with a 2.0L carbureted four-cylinder engine that delivers approximately 185 hp. Its striking white and green racing livery pays homage to Scottish racing legend Jim Clark, who notably won the British Saloon Car Championship in 1964.

Daniel’s Mk II Cortina, acquired in early 2016, showcases a different character. It has evolved over time, featuring a new 2.0L Zetec four-cylinder engine and a five-speed manual transmission. “We call it the secret handshake,” Daniel explains, referring to the distinct driving experience that comes after years of tuning and adjustments. He frequently drives this model on classic car rallies, blending comfort with spirited performance.

A Family Tradition of Enthusiasm

The latest addition to the Fonseka collection is the 1969 Ford Escort 1600 Mexico, imported from Finland. This model is not only popular in rallying circles but also has made its mark in popular culture, appearing in films like Fast & Furious 6. Its restoration has been thorough, although Daniel has already had to replace the head gasket and repaint the engine. His aspirations for this vehicle are clear: “Drive the hell out of it.”

All three cars are registered under British Columbia’s Modified Collector status, which permits various modifications from their original specifications. This status was originally designed for hot rods but has expanded to include models like the Fonseka’s classic Fords.

Despite the decline of small performance cars from manufacturers like Ford, the Fonseka family continues to celebrate the legacy of these vehicles. For them, fast Fords represent not only a passion for cars but also a cherished family tradition. As Daniel looks ahead, he envisions future adventures alongside his father, ensuring that their love for classic fast Fords remains vibrant in the Fraser Valley.
