A recent gala in Brampton has successfully raised $2.45 million to support the transformation of the Peel Memorial Centre into a fully operational hospital. This significant fundraising event, named the Next 100 gala, took place on November 22, 2023, and highlighted the community’s commitment to enhancing local healthcare services.

The funds raised at the gala included $1.8 million contributed by members of the Centenary Circle program, marking a notable effort in Peel Memorial’s centennial year. The event, hosted by Canadian comedian Jessica Holmes, featured performances from popular ‘80s bands, including Naked Eyes and Men Without Hats, creating a festive atmosphere to encourage generous donations.

The revitalization of the Peel Memorial Hospital will enable the addition of inpatient beds, a 24-hour emergency department, and improved outpatient services. Dr. Frank Martino, president and CEO of the William Osler Health System, expressed gratitude for the community’s support, stating, “Together, we are transforming Peel Memorial into a next-generation hospital that will serve our community with excellence for years to come. These funds will help expand programs, address the significant need for more specialized care, and support a growing population, ensuring patients receive the care they need, when and where they need it most.”

This fundraising milestone follows a significant project update announced in late October 2023. The Ontario government, through Infrastructure Ontario, signed a development phase agreement with Bird Design-Build Construction to advance the design, schedule, and pricing for the new hospital. This partnership marks a crucial step in the ongoing efforts to modernize healthcare facilities in the region.

Originally opened in 1925 as a modest 12-bed hospital serving a community of just 3,000, Peel Memorial has significantly evolved over the decades. It is now part of the William Osler Health System, which also includes Brampton Civic Hospital and Etobicoke General Hospital. As Peel Memorial embarks on its next century, the Osler Foundation continues to invite community members to learn more about the campaign and contribute to this vital initiative.

The enthusiasm surrounding the gala reflects a broader commitment to improving healthcare access and quality in Brampton. As the community rallies to support the development of the new hospital, the impact of these efforts promises to enhance the health and well-being of countless residents in the years to come.
