Carla MacLeod, the head coach of the Ottawa Charge, has announced her diagnosis of breast cancer but intends to continue with her coaching duties while undergoing treatment. In a news release shared on Sunday, MacLeod expressed her determination to remain active with the team during this challenging period.

“I want to share some personal news: I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Hearing those words was incredibly difficult, but I want everyone to know that I’m going to be okay,” MacLeod stated. She highlighted the support of her medical team, noting that they have developed a treatment plan that gives her confidence in her recovery.

Despite her diagnosis, MacLeod plans to maintain her role with the Charge and is committed to coaching the Czechia national team at the upcoming Milano Cortina Winter Olympics in February 2024. “There are still some variables to be determined as we move forward, but my goal—without question—is to be behind the bench as often as possible,” she said.

MacLeod began treatment this week, which will unfortunately prevent her from coaching during the Charge’s next game against the Minnesota Frost on December 2, 2023. “The FOMO will be real, but I’m incredibly lucky to be surrounded by world-class players, coaches, and staff who will keep pushing our group forward,” she remarked.

In her absence, assistant coach Haley Irwin will take over head coaching responsibilities for the upcoming match. Charge general manager Mike Hirshfeld expressed the organization’s full support for MacLeod as she navigates her treatment. “The Charge and League are here to support Carla throughout her treatment,” Hirshfeld stated. He praised her strength and resilience, emphasizing that she will tackle this new chapter with the same determination evident in her coaching career.

MacLeod’s commitment to the Ottawa Charge and the Czechia Women’s National Team reflects her passion for the sport. “Coaching the Ottawa Charge and the Czechia Women’s National Team is a privilege I cherish deeply,” she wrote. Her determination to stay involved with both programs serves as an inspiration to her team and fans alike.
