Wayne Gretzky Spotted Golfing with Trump, Sparks Controversy
UPDATE: Hockey legend Wayne Gretzky was seen smiling on the golf course with former U.S. President Donald Trump and other high-profile figures during the Thanksgiving weekend, igniting backlash from Canadian fans. The NHL’s all-time points leader, who resides in Florida, remains undeterred by the strained relations between Canada and the U.S.
In a social media post on Saturday, Trump shared photos and videos of their golfing outing that included American golfer Brooks Koepka and Fox News host Bret Baier. The former president, donning his signature “Make America Great Again” hat, appeared cheerful as he posed with Gretzky, who has faced criticism for his ties to Trump, particularly given the president’s previous remarks about making Canada the 51st U.S. state.
Despite the controversies, Gretzky has consistently avoided political discussions. He stated, “I know in my heart I’m Canadian, stayed Canadian, and a Canadian citizen for life.” This sentiment was echoed earlier this month during the 100% Hockey podcast, where he addressed the backlash from Canadians regarding his relationship with Trump and his actions during the 4 Nations Face-Off championship game.
Gretzky sparked further discontent when he entered the ice through the U.S. entrance and opted out of wearing a Canadian jersey during the ceremonial puck drop. Many Canadians expressed their disappointment, feeling that his actions undermined national pride.
The former NHL player, a dual citizen of both countries, has been a prominent figure in U.S. sports media since joining TNT as a lead studio analyst in 2021 after stepping down as vice-chairman of the Edmonton Oilers. His ties to Trump have been the subject of much discussion, especially after Trump suggested that Gretzky should consider running for Canadian prime minister, asserting that he would win any political office in Canada.
As the controversy unfolds, many fans of both Gretzky and Trump are left wondering about the implications of their friendship on national sentiment and identity. With Gretzky’s popularity enduring, the reactions to his latest public appearance will likely continue to develop in the coming days.
Stay tuned as this story evolves, and see how it impacts not only Gretzky’s legacy but also the ongoing relationship between Canada and the U.S.
