University of Victoria Responds to Controversial Campus Event
The University of Victoria has issued a statement regarding a planned public talk on campus scheduled for December 2, 2025, which has been described as divisive. Authorities at the university conveyed their commitment to uphold the values of ʔetalnəw ̓ əl ̓ | ÁTOL,NEUEL, emphasizing respect for individual rights and the importance of maintaining positive relationships within the community.
The university, led by acting president Dr. Robina Thomas, reaffirmed its dedication to honoring the memories of the lost children and survivors of residential schools, alongside their families and communities. The institution’s Indigenous Plan articulates the commitment to recognizing the self-determining rights of Indigenous Peoples and acknowledges the potential harm caused by failing to do so.
Organizers of the upcoming event did not notify the university or submit a request for approval to host it on campus. Consequently, the university clarified that this event is not sanctioned and remains unauthorized to take place on its premises. Dr. Thomas expressed awareness of the emotional toll such events can have on community members, stating, “I know events like this are impactful and members of our community are experiencing harm as a result.”
To support those affected, the University of Victoria has made resources and support services available for its community. Dr. Thomas urged individuals to lean on one another during challenging times and to uphold the inclusive and respectful culture that is central to the university’s values.
Available Resources for Students
The university has highlighted various support services tailored specifically for Indigenous students, including drop-in spaces and counseling options. Indigenous counselors offer both individual and group sessions that address the holistic needs—heart, body, mind, and spirit—of students. These sessions are designed to be flexible and responsive, with emergency appointments available on the spot.
The Hope for Wellness Helpline is another vital resource, available 24 hours a day across Canada. It provides support for a range of issues, including mental health concerns, anxiety, and coping with distressing stories in the media. Counselors can be reached via telephone or online chat in both English and French, with additional language support available upon request.
For immediate crisis situations, the KUU-US Crisis Line Society operates a provincial crisis line accessible to both adults and youth. This includes dedicated lines for adults and elders at 250-723-4050, as well as a toll-free line at 1-800-588-8717 for immediate assistance.
Other mental health resources available to students include SupportConnect, which offers confidential mental health support through qualified counselors at any time of day. Additionally, the Indian Residential School Survivors Society provides a 24-hour crisis line specifically for survivors and their families, reachable at 1-866-925-4419.
The First Nations Health Authority also collaborates with Indigenous Services Canada to provide a comprehensive mental health plan that includes counseling services from qualified professionals. Students are encouraged to access these resources to ensure their well-being and mental health amidst challenging circumstances.
As the university navigates this complex situation, Dr. Thomas emphasized the importance of community support, stating, “Our strength lies in unity and in living our values.” The university encourages all members to care for one another and to foster an environment of respect and inclusivity.
