On November 29, 2023, Saanich Commonwealth Place (SCP) officially opened its new waterslide, marking a significant upgrade to the facility. Dozens of children and their parents gathered to witness the event, which featured a demonstration by Mayor Dean Murdock, who was the first to take the plunge down the new slide. “We’re thrilled to introduce this brand-new slide to our world-class facility,” Murdock stated during the inauguration.

The new waterslide replaces an older structure that had served the community for over three decades. The original slide, which was part of the facility since its opening in 1993, was decommissioned two years ago after reaching the end of its lifespan. The decision to construct a new slide was part of a broader $1 million renovation project aimed at enhancing the 32-year-old complex.

New Features and Design

The newly installed waterslide boasts a vibrant design with colorful, patterned fiberglass sections. It has been developed by Whitewater West, a Vancouver-based company known for its innovative aquatic attractions. The minimum height requirement for riders is set at 102 cm (approximately three feet three inches), ensuring safety while allowing many children to enjoy the experience.

In addition to the waterslide, all aquatic areas within SCP have recently reopened following an extended closure for maintenance and capital improvements. This renovation aims to bolster the facility’s appeal and ensure it meets modern safety standards.

For residents and visitors interested in exploring SCP and its new offerings, further details can be found on the official website at saanich.ca. The addition of the waterslide is expected to attract more families to the facility, enhancing community engagement and recreation opportunities.
