Brandon University Receives $1.1 Million Gift to Expand Awards
Brandon University has received a generous gift of $1.1 million from longtime supporter Michael Chernoff to enhance one of its most esteemed entrance awards. This contribution aims to create new opportunities for outstanding incoming students, as announced by the university on October 23, 2023.
Chernoff, a resident of West Vancouver, has strong connections to the Prairies. The funds will support the Chernoff Family Award, established in 2001 in memory of his late wife, Dorine, and her parents, Agnes and Roland Dennison. Dorine, who graduated from Brandon College in 1951, passed away in 2023 at the age of 92.
Chernoff emphasized the importance of education and the role of family support in achieving academic success. “Dorine and I were first-generation university graduates in our families, and we realized how fortunate we were to be able to rely on the encouragement and support of our parents,” he stated. “When we were able, we committed to helping students throughout Canada pursue their education, and it has been deeply rewarding to hear from those we have been able to support.”
The award initially began with a contribution exceeding $500,000, which was matched by the provincial government and the Brandon University Foundation. Over the past two decades, the fund has provided financial assistance to the top two entering students each year, offering $7,500 annually to each, renewable for up to four years. To date, the fund has disbursed over $1.1 million to students at Brandon University.
With this latest contribution, the university plans to significantly increase the impact of the award. Starting next year, the Chernoff Family Award will be granted to the top entering student from each of the university’s four faculties—arts, education, health studies, and science—as well as the School of Music. Each recipient will receive approximately $6,000 per year, renewable for up to four years, allowing as many as 20 students annually to benefit. Each student could potentially receive a total of up to $24,000 over the course of their degree.
The impact of Chernoff’s generosity extends beyond immediate financial support. Christine Bovis-Cnossen, President of Brandon University, expressed gratitude for the donation, stating, “His commitment to honouring Dorine—and the family who supported her education—reflects the very best of what higher education can inspire. We are deeply grateful for this gift, which strengthens our mission, expands opportunity, and will enhance student success for decades to come.”
Chernoff views this gift as a lasting tribute to his wife’s educational journey and to the values they shared throughout their over 60 years of marriage. “This is a gift that will keep on giving,” he remarked. “I’ve been particularly touched by the number of students who, after receiving our support, have vowed to engage in similar philanthropy when they are able to pay it forward themselves.”
This significant donation not only honors the memory of Dorine Chernoff but also reinforces the commitment of Brandon University to support and nurture future generations of students. As the institution prepares to expand the Chernoff Family Award, it stands poised to empower more students on their educational paths.
