Windsor Launches Urgent Summer Student Job Lottery—Apply Now!
UPDATE: The City of Windsor’s summer student job lottery is officially OPEN! Applications are now being accepted and students must act fast—submit your application by 4:30 p.m. on January 9, 2026, via the city’s official website to secure a chance at employment this summer.
This initiative is crucial for students, particularly in light of Windsor’s troubling 18.2% youth unemployment rate for ages 15 to 24, the highest among major Canadian cities. With 700-800 applications expected, the demand for these positions is significant.
Vincenza Mihalo, the executive director of human resources, emphasized the program’s importance in providing youth with valuable work experience. “Many students are unaware of the diverse roles within the municipality,” she stated. “This program not only offers them a paycheck but also a deeper understanding of how our city operates.”
The lottery system uses a secure computer program to randomly select applications, ensuring fairness in the hiring process. Last year, the city successfully hired 179 students, a number they expect to match this year.
Windsor is not just facing high unemployment rates; the situation is even more critical for racialized youth. Recent reports indicate that Black youth face an unemployment rate of 28%, while Arab youth sit at 27%. This alarming trend underscores the need for immediate action.
To combat these statistics, Workforce WindsorEssex has launched its Youth Employment Work Plan, aiming to connect young people with essential resources. Project coordinator Mikal Fakhreddin highlighted the stigma youth often face in the job market, stating, “They’re generally treated as lazy workers and [lacking] in soft skills.”
Eligibility for the Summer Student Lottery Program requires applicants to be at least 17 years old by May 1, 2026, legally entitled to work in Canada, and attending school full-time. Participants must also return to full-time studies in September and be prepared to work all shifts starting after their final exams.
This job opportunity is not just about earning money; it’s a chance for young individuals to gain insight into municipal operations and explore potential long-term career paths. “It’s a win-win for everyone across the board,” Mihalo concluded.
Time is of the essence—students are encouraged to apply without delay to secure a spot in this vital program. The deadline is fast approaching, and with the pressing need for employment among youth in Windsor, this is a critical step forward.
Stay tuned for more updates as the lottery progresses. Share this news with fellow students and help spread the word about this exciting opportunity!
