Atalanta achieved a commanding 4-0 victory over Genoa in the Italian Cup on Wednesday, securing a place in the quarterfinals against Juventus. This match marked the first defeat for Daniele De Rossi since he took over as Genoa’s head coach at the beginning of last month.

The match began with Atalanta establishing their dominance early on. In the 19th minute, Berat Djimsiti found the back of the net with a well-placed header from a cross, giving Atalanta a crucial lead. The situation worsened for Genoa when 17-year-old Seydou Fini was sent off in the 36th minute for a foul on Raoul Bellanova, reducing Genoa to ten players and complicating their efforts to mount a comeback.

Atalanta capitalized on their numerical advantage shortly after the break. Marten de Roon doubled their lead with a powerful shot from outside the penalty area in the 50th minute. The home side continued to press, and Mario Pasalic made it 3-0 late in the match, sliding in to convert a low cross.

In a fitting conclusion to the evening, Honest Ahanor, who joined Atalanta from Genoa in July, scored his first senior goal during stoppage time, bringing the final score to 4-0.

This victory sets the stage for Atalanta’s next challenge against Juventus, who secured their spot in the quarterfinals with a win over Udinese earlier in the week. The quarterfinal match will be a significant test for Atalanta as they face one of Italy’s most storied clubs.

On the same day, Napoli faced Cagliari in another round of 16 match, while Inter Milan, the only Serie B team remaining in the competition, prepared to take on Venezia. The winner of Napoli’s encounter will go on to play either Fiorentina or Como in the next round, and Inter or Venezia will meet either Roma or Torino.

As the competition progresses, Atalanta’s impressive performance against Genoa underscores their potential as a formidable contender for the Italian Cup.
